You might be familiar with primates like monkeys and humans ( that means you are a primate reading blog post by another primate, haha! ). But, honestly, did you know about other primates like Lemurs, Lorises and Tarsiers etc…
Here are ten facts about some “other” primates…
– Lemurs are small furry creatures with long tails and big eyes. They are primates, like you and me.( Well, obviously they look different, Duh!?)
– Lemurs live only on the islands of Madagascar and Comoros, off the African coast.( Ahh! So that’s why there was King Julien in the movie Madagascar )
– Most Lemurs are active at night and live in trees, but the ring tailed lemur live mostly on the ground and is active by day.( Ring tailed lemurs get their name from their black-ring tail which they raise to show where they are )
– The ring tailed lemur rubs it’s rear on trees to leave a scent for other lemurs to follow.
– In the mating season, ring – tailed lemurs have stink fights for females, rubbing their wrists and tails in stink glands inder their arms and rear – then waving them at rivals to draw them off.
– Lemurs eat fruits, leaves, insects and small birds.
– Lorises and pottos are furry big – eyed primates of the the forests of Asia and Africa. All are brilliant climbers.
– Bushbabies are the acrobats of the Lorise family. They get their name because their cries sound like human babies crying.
– Bushbabies are nocturnal animals and their big eyes help them to see in the dark. Their hearing is so sensitive they have to block their ears to sleep during the day!
– Tarsiers of the Phillipines are small, huge-eyed primates. They have very long fingers and can turn their head halfway round to look backwards.
